Coast, Inc. is a fifty-year old family business with a proud history. Henry D. Scott moved to Portland, Oregon in 1944, from Louisiana, to build ships for the navy's war effort. After several years in this capacity, he was employed by Freightliner, a major truck manufacturer located in Portland.

In 1957, Henry D. Scott founded Coast Janitorial, with headquarters located in Portland, Oregon. In early 1967, the company incorporated and changed its name to Coast Industries, Inc., and in 1970, the corporation underwent a modest reorganization to assimilate a newly acquired business, Empire Security Services. In 2007, Coast, Inc. acquired Coast Industries, Inc. The new owners are Bernadette Artharee and Hasan Artharee, daughter and grandson of Henry D. Scott.
Services provided by Coast include commercial building maintenance; uniformed security services; and government contracting. From the company's headquarters in northeast Portland, the firm has contracted for:
- building maintenance for office buildings in downtown Portland,
- security services for commercial and industrial clients; and
- facility maintenance at government installations in California, Indiana, Texas, Tennessee and Washington.
In the 50 years since its inception, Coast has grown steadily. The company currently employs more than 150 management, administrative and service personnel in Portland, Oregon and New Orleans, Louisiana. Coast is fully qualified to perform a wide variety of custodial, security, and facility operations/maintenance services, including projects with contracting opportunities set aside for participation by small, disadvantaged, women and minority owned businesses.
Locally, Coast has assisted many former employees to either launch their own businesses or secure training to prepare them for career advancement. The company and its employees are very active in the community with many organizations such as St. Andrew's Nativity School, Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, Oregon Donor Program, Salvation Army Church Basketball League, Urban League of Portland, and many other programs that provide mentorship for young students. Coast is also a member of OAME (Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs).
